clothes for the hopelessly unfashionable

First off, the project I haven't yet started: Remember those hippy skirts from the 70's that are made from a pair of jeans with the little inset of fabric? They made a comeback in the 90's. (Think Dharma and Greg.) I've been imagining Nora toddling around this summer in one. Then I started thinking that maybe I wanted one too- but surely they are way too out of style- better just make one for the baby. So I walk into Kohl's the other day to buy a birthday gift for Chloe and what's the first thing I see? One of those exact skirts! In fact, frayed edges, tiered skirts, and embroidered appliques are all over that store- very bohemian. Then later online I see more. Here's one. Now two of these skirts are on my list, one wee, one not-so-wee, but definitely NOT matching. I'm not that dorky.
I am LOVING this skirt from Anthropologie, how cute- look at the patches! And this blouse, with the embroidered bird. Very sweet. I'm definitely adding a little blouse with some kind of embroidery to my list.
The other thing I noticed looking at the Spring clothes are the pants. Not all the capris- I have some of those. There are loads of pedal pusher length short pants. So that leads to the project I have just finished.

I had these two pairs of cut off jeans on my sewing table that needed some love. Neither pair ended up as short as I intended, but that's ok. I added tan linen cuffs to the bottom of the first pair to get them to a length I liked and some patches out of old hankies inspired by the green skirt above. I even did a little math and dug up a protractor to draw the hexagonal shape.

I raided my mom's stash of fabric to spruce up the second pair and I love it. I added a patch to the heiny area of that pair because there was already a little hole worn there, but it renders that pocket a little unusable- oh well. It's been awhile since I kept a comb in my back pocket.
Am I thrilled with these new pants? Yup. Am I more in fashion? Probably not.
