thrifting overload
Can these shoes be back in style, please? I found them at a thrift store this weekend. I LOVE them, and they're surprisingly comfortable.
I wanted these or a pair of wooden clogs when I was in the third or fourth grade, but my mom wouldn't let me have either. She said I'd break my arm. When my friend Wendy Scott got some clogs and tripped going down the stairs, guess what she did. She broke her arm. It didn't help my case one bit.
I found quite a few nice thrifted things this weekend. One is even a big piece of furniture that needs some love. The problem is I love the thrift store a little too much. I find great used things, most of which we need or can use, but I've been going overboard lately. Our fabulous summer is winding down. We've taken several vacations and spent a little too much. Suddenly I'm feeling the need to pare down and tighten the ship. With the arrival of a new season and the beginning of the school year, I want simple. Less clutter. And I'm dying to finish some of the things we've started. Fall cleaning- it seems to be a new trend. Today is the office/workroom.
We've also set some new spending rules and a few of them will affect my blog-life. First, I'm putting a temporary moratorium on swaps. I love them, but those little projects and postage can add up. Next, I'm self-imposing a Use What You Have period for the rest of August and all of September. I have plenty of projects to work on and my fabric stash has been slowly growing. I bet I could cover every surface in the house with patchwork.
And I just might.

I wanted those shoes too when I was in third grade and they look brand new! All of the thrift stores around here are overpriced and just have junky junk. I think for me that is good thing.

i have a pair of these in clear pink plastic...
they're always in style if you wear them with confidence :)
so hearing you on the thrifting overload. I've stopped my weekly visits. too much stuff for now. have been cleaning out closets like a madwoman and have 4 big boxes ready to give away. feels so good!
of course cleaning can give you ideas for remodeling and decorating projects, thus my engagement with the floor...

I think those shoes are totally in style, but what do I know? :) I spent a few summers in those shoes as a child -- they were great for putting on little dance shows. (They made lots of noise, like tap shoes.)
Fall cleaning and finishing-what-I've-started sound great. Those are much needed around here, too.

Those shoes look new! You're going to wear them aren't you? You should. 8-)
I hear you. WE need more money. I like to thrift. I don't need all that I buy hence---the coming of a store, hopefully.
I hope your plan goes well too!
I look forward to the "patchwork house" exhibit by Alicia at the MOMA.

I think Dr. Scholls ARE back in style! I've seen women around here wearing them, anyway. I think they redesigned them a couple of years ago. I did have a pair as a kid and loved them. Lucky for me I didn't break an arm! :)

Ooooo... I'm impressed with your goals. I should really instate the same.
Are the children still clomp-clomp-clomping around in your new shoes?

love the shoes - always in style in my book!

i think my favorite part of those shoes were how loud they were, are they still or was that just the way it seemed to my seven year old self? great goals, i am itching to do the same!

Those are timeless shoes, in my opinion. I made a quick stop in the thrift store yesterday and bought a couch. My husband is less than thrilled with the gold 1970 something sofa.

I have those shoes and LOVE them! And I'm not ashamed to admit I've tripped many o' times while wearing them! I hear you on the fall cleaning! I'm in the midst of a major cleaning movement in our household!

What a great find! I love them! I try to 'use what I have' but I am a total thrift addict and just can't resist buying stuff for that future perfect project - I wish I could be that disciplined! :)

I know what you mean about over thrifting... getting a bargain can be addicting... hey what was the outcome of the bathroom remodel ? Did I miss the reveal ????

Oh my goodnes, I wore a pair of navy scholls when I was studying in university, and so did everyone! Such a great find, they look brand new.
I know what you mean about over-thrifting, for us knitters, it's over-stashing. I am trying very hard to stay on a yarn diet.

My mom had a pair of red shoes like that and I so wanted some! They seem pretty stylish to me - wear them with pride.
I hear ya on the budget woes. We're facing the music after my having a summer off, spending too much, and incoming Dr. bills, along with having to buy a new dryer. I'll definitely join you in the "use what you have" for the next few months.

I guess you won't be joining the thrift challenge (lol) but I hear you on the thrift overdrive. But I find if I don't thrift for like a week it starts to eat at me and I just have to pop into a thrift store. But at the same time I am purging my basement and have 6 bags of items to take to the thrift store, 3 bags to the consignment store and a couple bags to give away to friends with small children. It's a cycle I guess. Well done on the goal to use what you already have.

I have to say I did a little ankle twisting when I was a kid, but always had to hide it from mom for the same reason!!
I understand the thrifting obsession too. Went to goodwill the other day and ended up with a full cart. I guess that's why I try to stay away.
Also...our bathroom is done! Hope you can find some encouragement in a fellow home remodeller's sucess. Check our blog for pics (don't know how to put a link here yet) BUT...now we have a roof leak!!

I have them in Navy - a hand me down from a fashionista friend. The pair I have now are not quite as comfortable as the original (also navy) pair that I had in the 70's? 80's? But they make the most glorious noise - especially when going down wooden stairs. CAH-LUNK! CAH-LUNK!
How's that bathroom going? We are going to try tiling ours this weekend by ourself. Wish us luck!

I had some of those at primary school. Mine had a blue leather peice at the front.
Then school banned them as evey one kept falling over in them - your mum was right!!!!

i would paint the straps on the shoes and have fun wearing them.

we weren't aloud to have these shoes either because we would "break an ankle" in them. But my best friend had a pair, and you better believe I wore them the whole time we played at her house.
great fall goals. need a little bit of tightening the ship here, too.

I had a pair of these when I was in high school (late 90's). I picked them up at a garage sale. Every single one of my friends thought I was such a nerd for wearing them, but I didn't care. I loved them!

thrifting overload - Clogs
Ok I love Blogs especially crafts & Recycling so when I came across your clogs - I have a perfect solution found in a recent edition of an Embroidery mag, Cut suede to match the size you need (they will be unadjustable and replace the clog strap with a colored suede that a design can be embroidered or handstitched onto to match any cool outfit. Attach by undoing the screws on the clog and cutting small holes in the suede and rescrewing into the clog base. If you need the Embroidery Mag title and date, let me know and I'll dig through my stash.

oh my goodness...I am laughing...during the summer between 7th and 8th grade I was wearing a pair of those wooden dr. schols...and tripped on our patio stairs and broke my arm. (and I still bought a pair of brand new red ones at a thrift store a year or two ago...couldn't resist!)
