in a mood

quiet1.JPG

I really resist the urge to complain here, but I am in a mood. The rain won't end. I slept horribly, thinking every time it started up again that this would be it. This must be the shower than would begin the slow trickle of water into our basement. (It doesn't flood, but we have had A LOT of rain. And there's more on the way. Several days more.) In between the downpours, I had a dream about Mother Nature as a living and breathing person. She was very pretty. She wore a blue dress. And boy was she mad at us.

I've been having a fling with black and white photographs lately too, which to me have an undercurrent of solitude and melancholia. I've been studying them on Flickr and the settings on the camera have been fixed this way for days. Did the interest in black and white appear because of the mood, or is the mood developing due in part to the interest? Who knows. But either way, they seem to be fueling each other. I'm also reading John Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany for my book club. It's wonderful. It's touching and funny but in that Forest Gump sort of way- hopeful and amusing yet so depressing.

I'm trying my best to embrace this mood and take it for what it is: I'm over-tired, I have a headache, I'm husbandless, I've got cabin fever and I'm worried our wee little garden is going to drown. In a day or two it will pass. The sun will return. The garden will surely dry out. Even if puddles appear in the basement I am blessed to have a basement to fuss over. Brian comes home this evening. I have fun plans this week. Summer is drawing near and I'm looking forward to it. But I'm trying not to look forward too much. I might miss something important right now.

Rain rain go away... I know. I'm feeling it too - and everytime it thunders in the night we've got two wee ones in bed with us. Oy. Hugs to you!

i'm loving the rain, EXCEPT for the lack of getting to work in the garden. another weekend passed without roto-tilling and planting all my zinnia seeds. hmph.

(hey, may i borrow your book when you're done? pretty please?)

No rain but cool here and we're feeling a little grey too. A mid-Spring slump maybe?

Sorry to hear the rain is getting you down. We've had some rain today, but to be honest the garden needs it and in the UK we do expect rain on a Bank Holiday.
A Prayer for Owen Meany is a fantastic book - I cried a number of times but it's full of hope. I felt bad when I laughed at the dak bits - but that's the point. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

i hope the clouds pass soon!

I am with you on this rain. I'm pretty pissy about it. Our basement is a mold factory waiting to start production. And we have one the best basements in the neighborhood. I know my neighbors must have even biger messes going.

I'm struck with how optimistic and positive your post closed. My own sentiments about this weather are filled with curses and expletives.
***But, I do keep reminding myself not to whine too much...because I have a lot (that other Kansans don't have to take for granted anymore...).

I also keep reminding myself that sun IS coming. Shortly after another 7 or so days of this muck. :) And then the heat. And, I'll probably whine and complain about that too....

And speaking of laughing up, I always chuckle when I think of that Christmas pageant scene from PfOM - oh my god that was funny. Great book.
--Tis the season for stormy weather eh? Sorry it's been such a long stretch. Its been wet and cloudy here but much less stormy thank God!

i love the black and white photos! especially the puddle shot!

I'm trying to figure out how to make you a rainclod pinata so you can whack the crap out of it.

Oh Alicia--- ditto. The rain! We live by a lake and it is in everyone's backyard. Docks and boats are floating everywhere. We have many roads closed. Our office buildings have flooded. Thank goodness we have electricity (especially because hubby is away on business) but for many the transformers have blown up and are under water. Part of the lake was evacuated because of sewage and of course all of the schools were canceled! I am exhausted. The storms at night have been so violent. I try to keep my blog light and happy---sorry I moved a cloud over here!!!! Maybe the sun will come out tomorrow! I do know that this is all minor and I am thankful that I can sit here in a family room and write. I pray that God sends caring and capable people to help all those in Greenburg, that their needs are met and that He keeps them all in His tender loving care!

your conclusion strikes such a chord in me.

i, too, try to find the beauty, even in the uglier moments - but we all forget, from time to time, and it's a gift to be reminded.

the most stunning part, for me, is your reminder about what is happening right now, in this moment.

thank you. today i needed reminding.

I so echo your thoughts, Alicia. Down mood, dark thoughts, poor sleeping due to drippy basement nightmares, drowning garden, book club melancholia . . . I hear you, sister. I knew we were on the same page when I saw your awesome reflection photo today. So, here's to hope and art and the return of sunnier days. And, being present in the midst of it all.

hope things get better for you soon. love the b+w photos.

Oh, I know how easy it is to get in a funk. But, like you seem to understand, it'll all pass soon enough! I'm curious what your fun weekend plans are?!

B & W images are so interesting---they are almost like they cut to the chase without the superfluous colors to get in the way... In the right mood, I really enjoy them!

I really enjoy the rain, but I live in an area where we get little rain. I think my city is still at less then an inch since last July. Normal would be 7 inches for the season.
I know we are in a desert but at this time of year the hills are usually covered in California Poppies (we are famous for them) and many other desert wildflowers, but this year the hills are bare of all flowers and all the grass is still brown. Its very depressing.

Your b&w pictures are great! My favorite is the tree in the reflection of the water.

From your post it seems like you are having a calm and peaceful day. Lol I wish I had more of those, expecially with all that rain!

aww...i'm just now catching up with blogs, so maybe now your mood has lifted, but if it hasn't i know that rainy feeling too! (seattle is home, hehe)

returning from summer weather in brasil to a grey, rainy feezing cold winter in uruguay i can relate too, it can wear on you!

sending you some cheer from all the way down here alicia...xo.

I hope you feel better soon Alicia. It's amazing how much the weather can affect our spirits. I find everything seems so much better when it's sunny. Glad to know you weren't affected by the Tornado. Hope you get some nice weather soon.

love the black and white and the sunny day today helped my mood immensely! we ended up with 11" over the weekend and a "flood day" home from school on monday.

Whatever your mood, your photographs are lovely...and the mural for your friend's daughter is really something special!

I love your black and white pictures! I should give that a try some time. I'm quite unhappy with mother nature myself but we're having the opposite problem you are. It seems like it hasn't rained for a thousand years here and half my state is on fire.

beautiful moody b&w photography!!!

That photo is awesome of the rain puddle with the tree and lamp post reflected in it.
