the power of granola
someone walked down the stairs and yelled at her daddy, "You don't look at me!"
that same someone was angry because she really wanted cereal not waffles. NO! CEREAL!
someone else calmly tried to explain we were out of cereal without losing his cool.
that same someone tried to toast waffles only to find that the toaster is dead.
a third someone had a meltdown because he never has to get dressed before he eats. Never.
that same someone slumps over his oatmeal because he didn't get to stir in the brown sugar himself.
a fourth someone, who last night boiled a chicken carcass, carrots, onion and celery for hours, woke up to a pot of spoiled, cold broth forgotten on the stove top.
that same someone banged around the pots as she poured the valuable broth down the sink.
What to do now? Sigh. Hug the two that have to leave. Promise to shake, shake, shake homemade butter with the boy as soon as he gets home. Snuggle the girl on the porch and wave goodbye. Cancel walking plans. Stay in the jammies. Hang out at home to paint all day (me) and make messes (her). And make Stephanie's granola. Seriously- the smell alone can heal the worst day.

Oh, Alicia. This is way, way too familiar. I love you and your family. Thanks for keeping it real, but sharing the beauty, too. And we all need to sit on the porch in our jammies a bit more. xoxox
Elle does the same thing with the brown sugar.

It's Di's granola at our house. She was our Aussie chef and my substitute mum when I lived in London, oh so many years ago. Here's to the power of making a bad day better!
Hugs!

This might have just described almost every single morning over here! Well, with a different granola recipe. And guess what, I have a pot of chicken and dumplings in my fridge that I totally forgot about until today. Um, don't think we will be having leftovers of that week old dinner. Bummer.

OK, I had to laugh at N's first comment... that sounds so like Madison! Fiesty little things, aren't they? Hope the rest of your day is better.

That granola recipe is seriously magic.

Ahhhh! My son and I were just talking about making butter this morning. Where did you find your directions for making it? I googled making butter but many say you should start with "raw" milk, fresh from a cow, which we do not have access to.

:-) -- Morning people you guys probably aren't... Well, after a bowl of nice granola I hope you felt better and remembered that those are all, in reality, great problems to have on a nice fall morning in Kansas. I still haven't tried that recipe but now that I know it is magic, I should get all the ingredients on hand so some morning when we are all grouching at each other we can make this and remember that we love granola and each other.

Oh I can smell it now. Thanks for sharing the chaos and reflection. I think it is so important to stop and really appreciate what we have, even on the cranky days! And those jammy days are great, aren't they?

so good to know that you have such good elixirs to remedy what sounds like a truly dreary morning. may they have done just the trick!

It sounds familiar and we have moments like this here, but it sounds cuter when you tell it :)

Oh the soup. I do that more than I care to admit.

I think any mother can relate to this post, I know I can. But isn't it amazing how quickly things can turn around? I think good food is a healer of many things. =)

Ugh! I did that very same thing a month ago when my mom was visiting. She was making me her Italian chicken soup, and we completely forgot about the pot until the next morning. It is such a waste. We never did end up making it :(
