OK, my camera/photo savy friends. I need your help: You know I use a Canon Rebel XT, right? Lately, about half of the photographs have been unreadable by iPhoto. It says they are corrupt files. And I have to reformat my cf card all of the time to get it to work in the camera. Please, please, please tell me this sounds like a cf card or a card reader problem... anyone? anyone? Just not my beloved camera.

hm... i'd definitely try a new CF card first to rule out the cheapest possibility first.

my camara did that once and all it was was the battery...have you tried getting a new one? (when all else fails...change the battery.) or have you tried reformatting the card...you will loose all photos on it so beware when you push that magic button. Whishing you luck...I know how important photos are at Christmas time.

gasp. I haven't any ideas!
...if you want to get together and swap gear we could maybe narrow the problem down a bit easier? I've got a Mac laptop and the Rebel XT, also. We could see if your camera plays nicely with my card, computer, etc?? I dunno... that may be a dumb idea, but if you want to try let me know..

Call Canon customer support--they're around 24/7 and are extremely helpful! My camera was acting up and they offered to fix it for free. (I haven't sent it yet, since I don't want to be w/o it for the holidays.)
You can find the # thru their web site.

If it's a card reader problem, shouldn't be able to tell by uploading your picks directly from the camera? Just a thought. My guess is that it's your card. At least I hope it is. That's certainly less expensive to replace than your camera and probably less than having your camera repaired. Whatever it is, I hope it gets fixed quickly and with little expense. If I think of it tonight, I'll ask my tech guy (that would be Dan...my husband and geek extraordinaire) if he has any insight.

I had something similar happen to me in the Spring (I shoot with a Canon 20D... very similar to your Rebel). A new CFC solved the problem. So I would guess it is your CFC and not the camera.

I say change the batteries, format the CF card. If that doesn't work then try a new card. I hope all that works.

I'm thinking it has to be the card.
And speaking of cards, I adore the way you are displaying yours. Wonderful!

no thoughts here unless you use iphoto, which is from SATAN. my nikon point 'n shoot did the same thing until i dumped a lot of pics out of iphoto and saved them to disk. that did it for me. also not running anything else while unloading pics from camera. iphoto is an evil, evil program that has given me tons of trouble but sadly my vintage mac runs little else.
good luck sweets!

canon also has message boards on their site--you can search and leave comments to people who have the same camera... but i would call. I didn't know they were so helpful, my canon has got some dust in the sensor and it shows up and it irks me cause it is only 11 months old...

Just a thought, but have you tried opening those same photos in another program other than iphoto? To me it almost sounds more like a problem with the program/computer than with your cf card or camera. I have never used iphoto, but if you use it to import your photos to your computer I would also try using a different program to see if that doesn't work. It almost sounds like maybe your computer is reformating your cf card or something... (Just a thought...)

Though I use a Nikon, I used to work in photo labs for years. Camera problems always seemed to be from periphery items---card, battery...that sort of thing. I'd try that first. Good luck.

Good luck with noticing project! Iphoto behaves strangely for me from time to time. Now I first import photos with Image Browser, the program that came with my Canon, and the same photos that couldn't be imported by iphoto works without problems in Image browser. There are advantages when emailing photos from iphoto, those pictures I import from the computer and doing so they work. I've given up finding a solution, feel like drowning in photos and cannot always remember where they were saved... Good luck!

I have a Nikon digital camera and one memory card in particular kept 'freezing'and saying that I had to reformat, but I knew I would lose all the photos. The store I took it into told me about software called'Don't Panic' which I bought and was able to retrive all the photos and then reformat the card. I don't use this particular card anymore but I do know that if I have to reformat I can now retieve my photos first. Hope this helps.
