the photo doesn't have anything to do with anything
except that she loves her too-big sparkly shoes. and also that I still love film.

SO... we were planning a quick nearby camping trip for the weekend. But the weather has suddenly turned very Fallish. This morning it was 49 when we woke up, and there's a chance of rain all weekend. To perk up their disappointed and drooping faces, we may instead watch a dvd on the the side of my mom and dad's garage, eat take-out in front of the fire pit, and sleep in the tent in their big back yard. At least if it does rain or gets too cold, we can make the speedy dash home. (Have I told you we live two blocks from my mom and dad? We do.)

Also unrelated, I didn't mention here that we're switching things up at Echoes for the Fall. Go check it out. We're excited!

I am hoping to add some items to my shop over the next few weeks- artist aprons maybe, a couple of paintings, maybe even some small works on paper inspired by the original idea at Echoes. I won't set a date- that's too much pressure- but I'll let you know if I've added anything.

Can anyone teach me how to knit those cool fingerless glove wrist warmers? I want some. Are they difficult? Would they be an awful first knitting project for me? I was thinking a large scarf/wrap/shawl thing might be easier, but I can't find a pattern for what I'm looking for. I want simple, plain, like a large rectangle with a strategically placed button or two. My friend Penny wears a similar one that I've got stuck in my head. Any suggestions? Leslie? Jen? Anyone?

Well, it's taken me all morning in little bits to write this mostly worthless post. I better call it quits.
Happy Weekend!!

I did participate in the echoes this summer, although I never did get anything uploaded into the gallery...but please know that I was inspired! I'll have to check out the new fall format.

glad to see that my kidlet is not the only one who like to wear their sparkly shoes large.
i think that link that mamasutra added for gloves would make a mighty fine beginning project.

Hi! I am wondering how to wash a doll you made, my tot tracked chocolate all over her last night and I think she needs more than a spot cleaning, can I put her in the machine?
On the knitting- I am a beginning knitter who just learned how to use rounds and doubles, which is what you would proably need for gloves- not a good first project in my opinion. I started with pieced toys and dishcloths, a scarf/shawl would be easy too. Have you been to ravelry.com? It is an awesome website that has tons of free patterns, pictures, etc. It is a gathering ground for knitters around the world. I have seen that scarf you mentioned, i will look for a pattern- although I may be hit by a cat 4 hurricane this weekend so I may not get back to the internet for awhile.
Enjoy your modified camping trip!

i'll swap you some gloves for an artist apron...think about it.
have fun camping in the back yard - it's almost more fun, in my mind!

Your Mom knits, right? I think if you have her expertise close at hand, fingerless gloves would be a fine first project. Choose a basic pattern, perhaps the one linked to above. Don't choose anything that's more than some ribbing and a bit of stockinette. Because it's small circumference knitting you'll need to use double pointed needles or two circulars. Magic loop is also an option. Since your Mom is your knitting help resource (am I remembering that correctly?) ask her what she'd use and then do what she says. They'll be time to learn the other techniques later. If you get stuck on something knittinghelp.com and You Tube, among other places, have great knitting videos that should help.
If all that feels overwhelming, go for knitting a hat. It'll involve some of those same techniques but in perhaps a less intimidating way. Hat's were my first projects and I always recommend them as a way to get started.

i've got the answer.
come home w/ me to the beach sometime & my mom, the power-knitter can teach you. :)

I think the pattern linked above looks like a good one for a beginner. This is one of the few I've seen that lets you knit a flat piece and then seam it up, so you don't have to try circular knitting right off the bat. If you need any help, I'd be glad to give a lesson or two! Or if you just want the mitts (without the knitting) I could probably be persuaded to knit some for you. Good luck!

oh. wish we lived closer. i would love to help you knit some gloves!
that pattern (up there) looks so easy.
i am going to post an easy pattern tomorrow. and if the double pointed needles are going to throw you, then i can tell you how to do it on regular.
hope your weekend is fantastic!

I will keep my eye out for a pattern for a nice wrap thing. Knitting is easy-peasy, girl. If it didn't take us TWICE AS LONG as it should to come there, I'd say we could even plan a weekend knitting date sometime. But ... not with how freaking long it took us to drive last time. :(
