get yourself to the dollar store
Buy a couple packages of tissue paper, some white school glue, and a bag of balloons. Pronto. Here are the directions.
When we popped the balloons, there was a moment of sheer terror when some of the sides tried to collapse, but as soon as the balloon was removed the edges smoothed right back out.
I'm dreaming of about 30 of these hanging from the trees over the patio on a calm summer night, twinkly music and fireflies, perhaps a sangria in hand ...

These look so festive and fun. Thanks for sharing the great suggestions. School holidays (summer here) are looming and I am scared! This looks like a great activity to keep them busy!

I keep coming back to these images.
Just amazing.
I was thinking the same thing about hanging them in the trees.
They would also be wonderful lining a snowy sidewalk -like luminaria.
I have a feeling you're going to have the entire blogland making lanterns:)

I totally love these. I think that these are so cool (and almost planet looking) that my kid would even consent to do them!

Simply beautiful!
St. Martins Day was our favorite holiday when we lived in Germany! Seeing all of the lanterns made by all of the children parading down the street at night------amazing!!!
