I ain't too proud
to dumpster dive.
Yesterday I went downtown to see a guy about a lens (no that's not code for something more!) and I ran across these really cool chairs in someone's trash. We have a similar set for our basement, but the other night the Christmas tree tipped over and water spilled everywhere, seeping slowing through the hardwood floor into the shop downstairs, slightly damaging the seat of one.
So when I ran across these covered in snow yet undamaged, I knew: it was meant to be.

OK, your Christmas tree fell over? And all you're worried about is a chair? You are a much calmer person than I. Yes, yes, you are.

I'm in that ain't too proud gang. We were driving down a country road on our way to a party when I literally punched my partner, getting him to pull over at the "Free" sign by the side of the road. As I suspected in the 80 km/hr fleeting glance. 4 lovely teak mid-century chairs. Free. I ain't proud, uh huh.

Score! My parents had a set of these for years when I was growing up. When the cane bottoms fell apart, my dad made plywood seats that they covered with batting and fabric.

I passed up some chairs like these in the trash a few years back and have regretted it ever since. I remember Martha had a bunch of projects using these chairs, here:

Well in a world where we throw way too much stuff away, I think you should feel proud! I've started buying lots more second hand stuff, especially clothes for myself. It seems so much more fun!! I bought a nearly new leather jacket on ebay last week and I can't tell you how happy I was with it and it cost me next to nothing!! It felt better than going into town and buying a new and not such well made one.
Have a wonderful Christmas with you little ones, Alicia and a wonderful new year to you all too, love from Clare in North Wales, United Kingdom.

Oh, goodness me! I was just thinking about that same exact style of chair and how I'd like to paint it red. Or aqua. Or white. Or ...
You're making me die over here, girl! You're making me die!

Oh yes soulsister! My dumpster diving friend. What a great story to tell your kiddos about how you acquired these chairs. I could not have made up a better tree dumping over story myself *wink*. Love the score!

I had a chair like that growing up. It was found by my grandfather on the side of the road. When I was around 19 I found an exact match to that chair, also on the side of the road. Now they are a pair. :) A little slower than your method, but amazing none the less!
