the questions

HELLO, my name is Alicia. Remember me?

I got a little Holga for Mother's Day, and I'm smitten. Here are a few of the photos from the first roll, because all posts must have pictures.

Surely you have noticed I've sort of lost my oomph here at the blog. I'm still around- working, taking tons of photos, and making stuff. I just often feel like I don't have much to say. School is about to end for the summer, which means even less time for staring at screens (which is a good, good thing.) So I have a few things to run past you.

Agenda item 1: I'm contemplating taking the summer off blogging. Or cutting way back. Maybe post weekly photo recaps. Would you all be completely bored I made it a word-free zone around here for a couple months? Would you click that dreaded unsubscribe button?

I, of course, am still a full-fledged Flickr junkie. And here's why: It's like blogging on speed. My friends are there! There's inspiration galore! Less words! More images! And there are conversations! I tell you, peeps. It's the place to be. Anyway, no matter what I decide, I'm always over there if you want to check in.

Agenda item 2: I want to restock my neglected shop, but I have found in the past if I bust my butt to get sew up a bunch of stuff and then it just sits there, it is very discouraging. SO, my question for you is- What shall I put in it? I've thought about making it all custom orders, perhaps personalized pillows, artist totes, work aprons, etc. But if the item isn't sitting there ready to go, is it still appealing? And how long is a customary length of time to wait for an order? Two weeks?

Agenda item 3: A shameless plea: Please don't forget us over at the Noticing Project. We miss you. Our stats feel tragically low and comments are too. We'll keep snapping whether anyone looks or not, but we'd really love for you to come along for the ride.

So that's it. The weather is perfect today; I must get back to putting laundry on my line. Thanks in advance for your advice!

xo.

Hi Alicia. I think I may be a first time commenter. I enjoy your blog and photos. I took last summer off from blogging. I worried about losing subscribers but I think most readers were totally supportive and returned when I did. I had to put the 'stats' aside in favor of quality of life. It worked out well for me. I think just photos would be as lovely.

I don't think I've ever commented here before, but even if you take the summer off of blogging, I'll still be a subscriber. :)

i remember, shortly after i first started reading your blog, you took a month or so off. i remember waiting and waiting for you to come back. and i was so happy when you did. i will be again, of course. but now it's even better because i'm over there with you. having fun. on speed. xo.

I think you should take the break if you are feeling it. I was thinking about reducing my posts during the summer too. It just doesn't seem like there will be time with all our strawberry picking and margarita drinking, you know? ;)

I remember wishing last summer, that I had taken it off. I don't think you'd loose subscribers through not posting for a bit. And, if you did, well, there'd be new friends to make on your return.

I need my 'Echoes' equivalent project for this summer. That was really enjoyable.

Love that camera...super jealous!

I'm feeling much the same way you are...I don't blog much, and when I do I feel it's boring (to me anyway). I spend way more time on flickr because I get immediate feedback and it honestly takes less effort on my part. There is something great about a blog, though, that gives more time for "conversation." I don't have a good answer, obviously!...but if you need a break, I say take it. :-)

i will miss you if you go... i will love it when you come back. and i will see you on flickr, i'm kind of quiet and shy there.

about etsy ~ i find that unless you are a super blogger (you know, books... patterns in mags etc) a big update is usually pointless. you are better of putting up on your blog one of those etsy thumbnail strips and add things as you make them. a few at a time... people will do a little window shopping while visiting here and then pop over. xoxo

it's not just you, blogs have gone wonky lately. i keep trying to take a deep breathe and roll with it.

and phsaw, like i'd ever unsubscribe from mayfly or noticing project [despite how little i comment].

xoxo

about the wait time for items- I feel you. But for some things that people really want- 2 weeks isn't too much. For my custom things I say 4-6 weeks but try to get them there in 2. And I love your work aprons. As in, wanna trade for my most popular item?

As for the summer off or decreasing, I don't often comment, and I see you on flickr, but I do enjoy reading your posts.

happy summer!

Umm, hello! Have you infiltrated my brain? I've been exerting a lot of brain power mulling over many of the same questions.

I'm trying to get back into blogging at the moment so we differ there but the thoughts about the shop are very similar. I quickly discovered that having stock costs money and, for me, the point of having a shop is to subsidize my habits (particularly my photography habit). I don't expect to make money hand over fist but I do want to create a business that doesn't require a lot of overhead. I've yet to figure out the perfect model for me. If I do, I'll let you know.

And Flickr. Ah, Flickr. My Bloglines is an absolute mess. I'm about to declare bankruptcy and possibly head over to Google Reader to begin anew. The number of unread posts is sort of staggering. But damn if I'm not over on Flickr multiple times a day. Even if I get a bit behind with my contacts there, it's nothing like what I've got going on with blog posts. It's short attention span theater with lots of visual stimulation. Just my cup of tea... I'm wondering if you and Heather have thought of moving the Noticing Project back over there? It's certainly not a perfect venue but I would venture to guess that more eyeballs will find your images there than they will over on WordPress. While I've heard from my own readers that they "don't do Flickr," I think there are far more people like you and me who feel a sense of community and that it's a more welcoming platform, one that's less dependent on words.

I'll miss you if you take a break but I'll be here when you get back.

your backyard glimpse through those lovely white windows makes my heart throb. so very peaceful, so beautiful.

I've been thinking about these same things lately. I won't unsubscribe, and I'll still see you on flickr too. I'd miss you here, but I totally get you. Totally.

You're not alone, friend. It feels like so many of us are on the same page. Take a break, we'll all still be here when you return :)

I have much I want to talk with you about -- on these very subjects, no less! I was coming by here because I had some of these same thoughts on my mind, and I was thinking, Alicia is the one to talk to about this, this, and this. Anyway, then there were my thoughts, in your post? I'm going to give you a call and really talk to you. But not right now because I have a cello student due to arrive in 20 minutes.

I love these photos. Beautiful! How about more artist totes (i loved those!) and maybe some kitchen things? Simple linen place mats and hand towels? (I'm planning on making some for my shop too!)

i would never unsubscribe. you do what you need to do. although, i am always with you over there. :)

i do a better job of keeping up with everyone on flickr. so even if you're not here, i won't miss you because i'll be getting high over on flickr with you. but i'll be happily waiting for your return.

as for your shop--i'd like to see you start stocking custom sofa slipcovers. :)

oh!! I had another idea--smocks like the one you made me ages ago!! i love it.

i'm fairly new to your blog, so i would be sad to see you disappear for a bit. i think the weekly post sounds perfect, even if there are no words. that being said, do what you gotta do and i'll follow you through flickr, anyhow. your holga and the sky shot really inspired me with my holga and this week i've featured all my first two rolls of holga shots, the last including a lot of sky inspired by you. thank you for that!

you should do what feels right. i'll still be over on flickr keeping tabs and honestly, i find i have less and less time to read blogs. and when i do, i don't comment on them as much as i did say a year ago.

i do love your holga shots - i think that a photo round up of the week is a great idea. then if you feel like writing some, you can. if not, no big deal.

as for the shop - that's a tough one. i am suffering serious burn out after one offering. and although i would like to do more, it takes away from other things that i also like to do.

ok - i'm stopping now. big hugs.

I don't subscribe to any posts, because honestly, I'm not sure how to! :) But you are linked from my blog because I learn so much from you and really enjoy your photos! I agree with everyone...take a break, enjoy your summer! I'll still be linked to you and will continue checking in from time to time. Thanks for all of your inspiration!
